As one of the most important wedding planning tasks, choosing the right photographer is imperative. If you partner with an inexperienced team, you’ll find yourself frowning at the set of photos in your wedding album.
To avoid experiencing a tinge of buyer’s remorse, make sure you do your research and hire a team of experienced wedding photographers with an impressive portfolio. Struggling to get started? We’ve created a guide to help you ask the right questions, focus on the right details, and make an informed decision. Let’s dive in!
1. Look into Their Experience
In many cases, couples solely look at their wedding photographer’s portfolio instead of their experience. This is one of the biggest wedding faux pas you could make. While browsing through the portfolio is important, taking their experience into consideration is just as imperative.
If your wedding photographer recently launched their business, it’s very likely that they’ve only worked on a handful of projects. Ultimately, they’ll lack the technical and creative insights one gains as they photograph hundreds of weddings over a span of several years.
At TLIC, we have 11 years of experience under our belt! We’ve captured a wide range of weddings, and mastered our craft over the years. Once you partner with us, you can rest assured that you’re doing your big day justice.
2. Get a Good Grasp on Their Portfolio’s Aesthetic

Each couple has unique style preferences. Before you get started, flip through at least 8–10 sets of wedding photos for individual weddings. The more, the better!
As you examine the photos, you’ll find some aspects that you love (e.g., specific lighting, angles, editing, etc.) and some that you’d rather do without. Ultimately, ask yourself if the photographer’s aesthetic matches yours. If there’s any inconsistency, keep looking until you find a photographer whose work resonates with your unique style as a couple.
Once you find “the one,” double check their experience. If everything’s on track, it’s all systems go! We’ve rounded up some weddings from our portfolio to help you gauge whether we’re the right fit for you:
- Carey & Oleg’s Wedding
- Sophie & Jake’s Wedding
- Brittani & Matt’s Wedding
- Rikki & Brian’s Wedding
- Olivia & Liam’s Wedding
- Hope & Tyler’s Wedding
- Tess & Kyle’s Wedding

3. Reviews, Reviews, Reviews!
When choosing the right photographer, taking reviews into consideration is imperative. As you read other couples’ experiences, you’ll gain more insight into the photographer’s work ethic, versatility, photography style, attention-to-detail, and several other key factors. Make sure you read as many reviews as possible.
At TLIC, we have a plethora of five star reviews under our belt! We work assiduously to ensure each project is executed to perfection, so you can look back at the memories with a big smile of nostalgia and contentment on your face.
